Here in the Midwest we love comfort food, home cooking and easy living. What is easier and more comforting than a plate full of tater tot casserole? It’s okay, there aren’t many things better…
It is a great recipe to get the kids in the kitchen and teach them some simple cooking tips. Browning hamburger is the only step prior to mixing it all together and throwing it in the oven, that is a great time to teach them such a simple but important tool when cooking.
You can use browned hamburger in so many recipes and typically, I brown a couple pounds at a time and save the rest in the fridge for lunches or other dinners later in the week. We use half venison meat and half family raised beef. Both are so much healthier and lower in fat content (way less greasy!) than store bought. This way, we also know where our meat is coming from, we hunt for our own venison and my father in law raises cattle.
Tater Tot Casserole
- 3 C Browned Hamburger
- 1 Can Cream of Mushroom
- 1 Can Green Beans You can leave these out if you choose
- 1 C Shredded Cheddar Cheese
- Tater Tots enought o cover the top of the casserole
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Brown your hamburger and drain grease. I used prebrowned hamburger, we usually make a batch of about 3 pounds ahead of time that's half venison and half beef.
Mix browned hamburger, cream of mushroom and drained green beans together. Place in ungreased 8" x 8" square pan.
Spread cheese over hamburger mixture and top with tater tots.
Bake for 30-45 minutes. Make sure to check it early, each oven is different.
If you want to use a 9" x 13" pan, just double the recipe and you will need to add time to the cooking.
